A Water softener works through an ion exchange process where hard minerals like
calcium and magnesium are swapped for sodium or potassium ions. As hard water
flows through a tank of resin beads, the positively charged hardness minerals are
attracted to the negatively charged beads displacing the sodium ions. The sodium ions are released into the water, making it “soft”, while the hardness minerals remain on the beads. When the beads become saturated, a regeneration cycle occurs, where a brine (salt) solution flushes the hardness minerals from the beads and recharges them with sodium ions.

Small parcel items ship regular ground via delivery services such as FedEx, UPS or DHL. Orders typically take 2-3 business days to process and in-stock items will usually be delivered 3-5 days from the date that they ship (depending on origin and destination). The sodium ions are released into the water, making it “soft”, while the hardness minerals remain on the beads. Ion Exchange Process
- Hard water enters the system : Hard water flows into the mineral tank containing negatively charged resin beads coated with sodium ions.
- Ion exchange occurs : Calcium and magnesium ions (hardness minerals) have a stronger positive charge than sodium. These ions attach to the resin beads and displace the sodium ions.
- Softened water exits the system : Sodium ions replace calcium and magnesium in the water. The softened water leaves the system and is ready for use.
Regeneration Cycle
- Regeneration is triggered : The system automatically starts regeneration once the resin beads are saturated with hardness minerals.
- Backwash : Water flow is reversed to clean the resin bed and remove dirt or debris.
- Recharge (Brining) : A concentrated brine solution from the salt tank flows through the resin tank. Sodium ions from the brine replace the calcium and magnesium ions on the resin beads.
- Rinse : Excess brine and displaced hardness minerals are flushed out through the drain.
- System reset : The valve returns to the normal softening position. The system is ready to begin the softening process again.
